AEC3 participated in the research project MEFISTO
The project's goal is a process- and risk-controlled management guidance system for building & constructing on a partnership basis. A frictionless building process is the main focus while concentrating on simulating and analyzing the project risks as well as the logistics and assembly processes. Concerning the building information alone the coordinating of design decisions has been very much improved by using BIM methods and the open IFC standard. A similar progress can't be observed in the field of project management yet. Consequently many decisions before and during construction have to be taken without a complete set of information.
One of the project's main topics was the combining and analyzing of project information. The method to do that to combine different data sources as required to multi-models. Next to GAEB DA XML and REB 23.003 also IFC was used. AEC3 was given the task to integrate the IFC model into Mefisto's overall concept. Four areas of expertise were chosen in coordination with the project partners. They are as follows: An application model for the building, the construction site, the organization and the scheduling. Different IFC versions and technologies were used as needed: In case of the building model the current IFC version 2x3 and the ISO data format could be used due to well spread software support. But for the scheduling model the future IFC version 4 and the XML-based data exchanged were chosen. The relevant IFC definitions had to be selected for each of the fields of expertise and regarding an as easy as possible implementation had to be specified by defining model extensions.
AEC3 contributed two important documents on implementing so-called IFC model views that were based on some work AEC3 had done earlier. The first one contained the definition of mvdXML, that makes it possible to formally describe an IFC subset with it's extensions including the necessary documentations. The second's topic was the making of IFC subsets comprising of two steps. The first step is to generate a consistent EXPRESS definition, the second is it's conversion into a XML schema definition, where differently to the ISO standard 10303 Part 28 it is possible to have optimized configuration settings.
